Water Softener vs. Water Filtration Systems – which do I need?

Utah has hard water.

The state average is around 298 parts per million (ppm). Water is considered hard at 150 ppm or higher.

Water softeners are the solution to most hard water problems. They work by removing the minerals like calcium and magnesium that make water "hard" and replacing them with salt ions. This prevents limescale buildup on pipes and appliances. This prolongs the life of water-using appliances. It also improves lathering of soaps, shampoos, and detergents, which means you'll use less for cleaning and personal care. It is gentler and rinses easier, leaving skin, hair and clothes feeling cleaner and softer after washing.

Water quality is equally important as water softness. While water softener systems remove calcium and magnesium, they don’t remove any other contaminants. Water filtration systems can remove a wide range of contaminants like lead and heavy metals, bacteria and microorganisms, chlorine, pesticides and other chemicals and sediment depending on the filter type. This provides safer and better-tasting water for drinking and cooking and again prolongs the life of water-using appliances by preventing mineral buildup and corrosion.

In short, water softeners help reduce hard water problems but do not filter out other contaminants. Water filters, whether whole home or point-of-use, remove impurities but do not address water hardness. Often a combined system is ideal for whole home water quality and treatment.
